Fake Mustache Clowns Kept in Check in Alabama
The sign says “church,” not “fake mustache comedy club.”
But in Alabama, this distinction is more than just common sense — it’s a matter of law. It is a crime to wear a fake mustache that causes laughter in church in the Heart of Dixie.
There’s not much debate these days about whether the law is a well-intentioned attempt at preserving order or a brazen assault on the First Amendment, since police don’t seem to be enforcing the obscure statute. But that hasn’t stopped an anonymous free speech defender from campaigning to repeal the law with an online petition, which has 165 virtual signatures at the time of this writing.
