A recent study from the Federal Trade Commission has shown that up to 40 million Americans – or 1 out of every 4 consumers – have errors on their credit report. http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/11/millions-may-be-affected-by-credit-report-errors/ “These are eye-opening numbers for American consumers,” said Howard Shelanski, Director of the agency’s Bureau of Economics, in a prepared statement about the study, which was mandated by Congress.
This reports highlights the need for all consumers to be aware of the contents of each of their credit reports. Consumers can obtain a free annual credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies - Experian, Trans Union and Equifax. Free reports can be obtained online at www.annualcreditreport.com. Obtaining "free" reports from other popular sites could lead to unintended monthly charges.
