A man left in a wheelchair in the sun at a Florida nursing home passed away after suffering second-degree burns, blistering, and symptoms of dehydration, leading to an investigation of the home. Police report that the 65-year-old man was immobile and had spent hours outdoors as temperatures rose into the 90s.

The man later died from heart failure. An autopsy was under way this past Monday to further investigate the death. The state Department of Children and Families issued a statement on Tuesday, announcing a death investigation will occur. Additionally, a spokeswoman for the Agency for Health Care Administration reported they will also be looking into the circumstances surrounding the death. The 65-year-old man had no living relatives and suffered immobility issues, psychiatric problems, and had been at the facility for years.

GraceWood Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, where the incident took place, would not comment. The facility has been on the state’s watch list since November, 2013 after not meeting or following up on minimum standards following an inspection.

The health care proxy who advocated on behalf of the man, Fernando Gutierrez, reported hearing the news of his death through the hospital and not by the facility. He further reports there is no information on why the man was outside to begin with and how he had gotten there. Gutierrez was supposed to be notified if one of his patients went to the hospital. After the incident, he has decided to remove 10 of his other patients from the facility and is relocating them to new homes.

Pinellas Park police are looking into whether nursing home neglect or abuse was involved in the incident. State records show GraceWood has been fined at least three times since 2012 in regards to the care of patients.
