Philadelphia Defective Product Lawyers: Polaris Recall Update

Even More Polaris Products Recalled due to Dangers to Consumers
Polaris, a company that manufactures all-terrain and off-highway recreational vehicles, is once again recalling its products due to serious risks to consumers. This time around, Polaris is recalling its Ranger 900 recreational off-highway vehicle (ROV) and its Sportsman All-Terrain vehicles (ATV) because of fire, crash and burn hazards.

This is not the first time that Polaris has been plagued by complaints of consumer safety violations by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Recently, the company pulled 25 of its ATV models because of more than 800 consumer incidents, including 47 fires and 4 severe burn injuries.

Recreational off highway vehicles are used on a terrain similar to ATVs, but have steering wheels instead of handlebars for control. ROVs can travel at speeds greater than 30 m.p.h., therefore increasing the risk of serious injury or death from an accident.

Polaris’ ROV recall includes more than 51,000 vehicles sold throughout the U.S. The affected models come in multiple colors and have different VIN numbers and were all sold between April 2014 and March 2017. In total, there are 25 ROV models that Polaris has recalled in compliance with the CPSC. So far, there have been 13 consumer reports, five of which included fires. Luckily, no injuries have been reported as of yet.

Polaris’ ROVs are defective because of the vehicle’s heat shields. The shields are able to fall off, and when they do, there is a chance of a fire occurring. The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately stop using their ROVs and to contact Polaris directly so that the company can provide repairs to the vehicles, free of charge. Polaris’ second, recent recall is for its Sportsman ATVs, which have been marked by complaints before. This product also has a serious defect, which causes its electronic power steering console to malfunction, causing a dangerous crash hazard for consumers. So far, the CPSC and Polaris have received 15 reports of the power steering being defective. At least 19 models are included in the recall.

The recalled ATVs were purchased between September 2016 and March 2017. Similarly to the recalled ROVs, the CPSC advises consumers to discontinue use and contact Polaris directly so that the company can conduct a free repair. In order to access that information, you can click here.
