Blacks Singled Out for Marijuana Arrests, Study Says

Black and white Americans use marijuana at roughly equal rates, but black users are nearly four times more likely to be arrested, according to a report from the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU study used FBI crime reporting statistics and census data to track marijuana possession arrest rates by race from 2001 to 2010. Vermont Decriminalizes Marijuana

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin has signed a bill decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana. By reducing the penalty for getting caught with up to an ounce of marijuana to a civil fine, Vermont became the 17th state to reclassify simple pot possession. Under the new law, which takes effect July 1, fines for first-time adult offenders would not exceed $200. People under age 21 who are caught with an ounce or less of marijuana would be subject to …
