Florida Enacts Ban on Texting While Driving

A new texting while driving law was enacted in Florida recently, but critics say that the measure lacks teeth. The law, which came into effect on Oct. 1, is a secondary offense, meaning police cannot pull over drivers unless they commit another infraction in addition to texting. Drivers Can’t Use Map Apps on Road, California Court Rules

Perfect timing for National Distracted Driving Awareness Month: A California appeals court has ruled that using a map application on a smartphone is just as much in violation of the state’s distracted driving laws as using the phone to place a call or write a text message. Wrongful Death Suit in Utah Texting While Driving Fatality

The family of a Utah boy who was killed in an alleged texting-while-driving accident is suing the driver who hit him for wrongful death. The accused driver, Jeffery Lloyd Bascom, is also facing criminal charges under the state’s distracted driving law. Thomas LaVelle Clark, 15, was walking along a semi-rural road on the outskirts of the town of Vernal when he was hit from behind by a pickup driven by Bascom, 28. Think again if you have a habit of texting while driving your car. A Massachusetts teenager was texting and as he drove down a street and crashed into another car, killing the driver and injuring the passenger. In Massachusetts, distracted driving is a crime.
