Snow Storms and Highway & Interstate Accidents in North Carolina

BadeWRAL reported at least 200 auto accidents caused by the recent snowstorm that hit North Carolina on January 25, 2013.  While the storm brought less than an inch of snow, sleet and rain, it was enough to cause a mess on the roadways as thousands of drivers headed home early to avoid the worst of the weather.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol answered more than 400 calls from motorists in distress, and First Sgt. Jeff Gordon said nearly 200 accidents were reported in Wake County by 8:00 p.m.

Among these accidents was a school bus carrying 21 elementary students, which slid off snow-slicked Fox Road in Wake County and into a tree in the afternoon, sending two children to the hospital with minor injuries. Later in the day, car wrecks shut down parts of interstates 95 and 40.  Additionally, from Greensboro to Fayetteville, Rocky Mount to Southern Pines, highways temporarily closed as cars overturned and dozens of crashes dotted the thoroughfares.

However, road accidents are not only the result of bad weather. According to North Carolina’s Department of Transportation, a serious or fatal automobile accident occurs every 6.8 minutes in our state, and many of these are on one of North Carolina’s busy interstate highways or freeways.

One of the most common causes of car accidents in North Carolina is driver negligence. Our attorneys help injured victims recover compensation for injuries sustained in accidents caused by all types of driver negligence, including texting while driving, distracted driving, accidents caused by DUI or fatigue, unsafe lane changes, speeding, running a red light, failure to obey road signs or rules of the road and failure to yield.

If you or someone you know has been involved in a highway accident, it is important to know your legal rights.
