What to know when you are in a Car Accident with an Uninsured Motorist

A car wreck can be scary, stressful, and costly.  Those involved in car accidents can endure injuries, pain and suffering, lost time from work, and lose the use of their vehicle. A car wreck can be even worse if the other driver does not have insurance at all or enough insurance to cover your losses.

The most recent data from the Insurance Research Council estimates that approximately a little over 14% of the driving population is uninsured. If you are involved in an accident with someone who is uninsured, you may be left without a full recovery.  Knowing and selecting proper coverage of your own may help prevent the situation where you are left without full compensation.

There are some things you need to know about motor vehicle insurance:

  • The minimum insurance required in Texas may not cover the full extent of injuries and damage that occurred in the motor vehicle accident.
  • Purchase insurance with uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.  Also referred to as UM or UIM coverage.
  • UM and UIM coverage are designed to cover your losses when the other driver does not have insurance or the other driver’s policy limits are inadequate.

?? At the same time that you purchase UM and UIM coverage, you should also purchase Personal Injury Protection insurance to help cover the cost of medical bills.  To learn more, please read What is PIP Protection?

The best defense is a good offense.  Be prepared for a car accident with an uninsured or underinsured motorist by ensuring that you have proper coverage.  Contact your insurance carrier to discuss your policy and determine if you have the coverage that you need.
