Study Shows Co-Habitation No Longer Predictive of Divorce

For many years, one of the
generally accepted norms regarding the potential success of a marriage
was that if a couple lived together while they were engaged but before
they were married, that couple was more likely to ultimately pursue a
divorce than people who did not live together before marriage.  However,
a recent study has been completed by the government that suggests that
this norm could be changing with the times.

Specifically,
the government has recently finished an enormous study of more than
22,000 people with regards to their lifestyles, marriages and the
ultimate success of them.  The study concluded that unlike generations
past, people who live together while engaged but before they are married
are no more likely to get divorced than people who do not live together
during this time.  However, the study also found that people who lived
together without being engaged were more likely than others to pursue a
divorce after they were married.

The
study has only recently been released, but it could serve as a new form
of commentary on what tends to lead to more successful marriages and
what does not.  What used to be a moral decision with regards to
cohabitation is now more of a pragmatic one, and some experts feel that
this decision point could be what is changing these results.  More study
is expected to be done in the wake of these findings.

San Diego Divorce Lawyers

While
studies like this one can be fascinating for many reasons, it seems to
still hold true that every couple’s situation is unique and will not
necessarily fit into a formula.  Unfortunately, people will still
encounter the need for a divorce and they will need to take steps to
make sure that their legal rights are properly protected if they
encounter such a situation.
