All You Need To Know About Brain Injuries

The Brain Trauma Foundation carried out a survey and reported that about 1.6 million Americans suffer brain injuries annually. Furthermore, up to 50,000 of these injuries are fatal. In fact, statistics has revealed that brain injuries are the leading cause of death in Americans between the age of 0 and 45 years. This is an astounding revelation and another shocker is the fact that a large proportion of these injuries result from auto accidents and industrial accidents which often result from an act of negligence. With this antecedent, acquiring some knowledge about brain injuries becomes necessary.

Causes of Brain Injury

As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, auto accidents are the leading causes of brain injury in the US. Auto accidents, also referred to as motor vehicle accidents, often result from several factors. Some of the causes of auto accidents include acts of negligence, faulty vehicles, disregard for traffic rules, distracted driving and several others. Apart from auto accidents, other causes of brain injury include industrial mishaps, homicides, sports, falls, and several others. Demography also comes into play in the causes of brain injuries with some causes being more prominent amongst certain age groups.

Types of Brain Injury: Every case of brain injury can be classified under two categories: Penetrating and Closed head injuries.

Penetrating Brain Injuries: also known as open head injuries, this category includes all cases in which the skull of the victim is penetrated by the offensive penetrant. In open head injuries, the major damage to the brain results at the point where the skull is pierced or cracked with little or no damage to other parts of the brain away from the area of penetration. The major risk associated with penetrating head injuries is the secondary infection that results from the penetrant trapped in the brain.

Closed Head Injuries: Brain injuries under this category occur more frequently.  They result from hitting the head or having the head hit with extreme force against or with an object. Apart from the damage done to the brain at the point of impact, further damage occurs to other parts of the brain and can have dire consequences, some of which include problems with communication, memory, swallowing and coordination.

Whatever the cause of brain injuries, whether auto accidents or malicious acts, it is advisable to get in touch with a reputable lawyer as soon as possible to start the process for making claims.
