The basics of Burn Injuries

According to a survey carried out by the ABA (American Burn Association), over half a million Americans spanning all ages are treated annually for burn injuries. All types of burn injuries affect the skin and of course, with the myriads of functions carried out by the skin in the preservation and performance of vital life functions, the consequences of burn injuries are significant and often severe. A case of burn injury is also categorized under personal injury and just like other personal injury cases, there are several laws in virtually all American states that provide victims of burn injuries with compensation and justice especially when caused by an act of negligence.

Types of Burn Injuries: Burn injury cases can be classified into several categories depending on the cause of the burn. Some of the causes include:

Chemical Burns: these burn injuries include those caused by different chemical compounds including detergents, solvents for home use, laboratory reagents, acids and bases.

Electrical Burns: these result from a surge of electric current through the body.

Thermal Burns: these refer to burns that are caused largely by heat sources. Examples include those caused by hot liquids, hot appliances, fire, steam, and other related heat sources.

These are the major types of burns. Some others include those caused by cold, radiation and friction.

Negligence and Burn Injury

A large proportion of burns result from the negligence of one party or the other. This can occur in various forms. It can be as a result of a malicious act, an accident due to failure of a party to put in place proper checks and balances, or due to ignorance of a party in ensuring that proper safety precautions are adhered to. The law has made available a lot of provisions that allow compensation of the victims for a variety of damages. The important thing in burn cases just like any other type of personal injury case is to prove that the particular case of personal injury occurred as a result of the negligence of a particular party.

This is why a personal injury lawyer should be contacted as soon as possible so that the compensation proceedings can be instituted. This is because there are statues of limitations in personal injury cases including burn injuries. This means that if a particular period of time elapses, no claims can be made again for compensation.
