Dialysis Lawsuits Result From a Lack of Warning

GranuFlo and
NaturaLyte

Many people who suffer from the loss of kidney function use
dialysis to maintain the health of their blood and body. GranuFlo and
NaturaLyte are drugs used during hemodialysis treatment for patients suffering
from kidney failure. Dialysis is also responsible for maintaining the acid/base
balance in the patient’s blood as well.

Therefore, many doctors used GranuFlo and NaturaLyte to help
prevent acid buildup. However, the drugs contained higher than average
bicarbonate levels and were causing bicarbonate overdose in numerous patients.
This overdose resulted in metabolic alkalosis in patients – a condition that
causes severe side effects including vomiting, coma, stroke, and heart attacks.

Fresenius Fails to
Warn the Public of Possible Dangers

Unfortunately, many patients were given GranuFlo and
NaturaLyte during their dialysis treatments that were supposed to help sustain
their life, not harm them. Many users experienced heart attacks and are now
filing dialysis lawsuits. It is reported that 941 patients experienced cardiac
arrest while receiving dialysis treatment at Fresenius Medical Care Centers.

Once Fresenius Medical Care learned about the potential
dangers they sent a memo warning that the cardiac problems were caused by the
doctors’ failure to properly prescribe the drugs and account for the higher
bicarbonate levels. The memo was sent to internal centers in November of 2011.
However, Fresenius did not warn customer clinics about the potential side
effects. More than 100,000 dialysis patients were receiving GranuFlo and
NaturLyte at outside centers not facilitated by Fresenius. These 100,000
patients were put at risk by these products and could have been prevented.

Dialysis Lawsuits

In 2012, the Food and Drug Administration issued a Class 1
recall, indicating that use of the drug can lead to possible health
consequences or death. Many patients have experienced heart attacks, stroke, or
loss of a loved one due to these products. Their suffering could have been
prevented had Fresenius Medical Care performed more thorough research of the
products’ safety. Once the medical company realized the dangers associated with
use of their product, they failed to effectively warn the public and emphasize
the dangers. You may need a Dialysis lawsuit injury lawyer overall.

Many people today are filing dialysis lawsuits in order to
seek justice and retribution. If you or someone you know suffered due to use of
NaturaLyte and GranuFlo during dialysis treatment, you should contact a
dialysis injury attorney. A dialysis injury attorney may be able to compensate
you for any physical or emotional suffering caused by the product.

Dialysis Treatment

An extremely useful treatment for renal failure and kidney
disease is dialysis. Dialysis is helping to save thousands of lives today as it
works to filter patients’ blood of toxins, wastes, and excess fluids. Many
people rely on dialysis as an artificial kidney.

Dialysis Drugs as
Dangerous

Unfortunately, dialysis treatment can be detrimental to
one’s health as well. Fresenius Medical Care, the largest manufacturer for
dialysis treatment, products, and centers, released two drugs called GranuFlo
and NaturaLyte. The drugs were given to about 30% of the 400,000 Americans who
receive dialysis treatment.

Today, GranuFlo is so popular that it is the most prescribed
dialysate. The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in 1992, but the
formulation of the drug changed in 2003 as it was transformed into a dry mix.
NaturaLyte is the liquid concentrate. Both of these drugs are acid concentrates
and work to prevent acid from building up in the patient’s blood.

Bicarbonate Overdose

However, many health care providers were not aware that the
drugs possess a much higher bicarbonate level. When prescribing the drugs, the
doctors were not accounting for the increased bicarbonate contribution. Thus,
many patients experienced base poisoning, also known as metabolic alkalosis.
This condition caused many patients to experience vomiting, coma, and even
cardiac arrest. In several cases, patients died the day after receiving
dialysis treatment.

 Lack of Warning

Fresenius Medical Care failed to effectively warn the public
of possible bicarbonate overdose. The company is responsible for educating
doctors and health centers about the risks associated with their products.
While the drug manufacturer did send an internal memo to doctors and centers
within their network, they did not inform customers outside of their network.
More than 100,000 patients were given these drugs outside of their network and
were not properly informed.

Dialysis Injury
Lawsuits

A number of patients are filing dialysis lawsuits against
Fresenius for lack of research regarding their products and disregard toward
public safety. If you or someone you know received dialysis treatment using
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte and experienced cardiac arrest or stroke, it is
important to seek a dialysis injury attorney.

A dialysis injury attorney can help you file a claim in
order to gain monetary compensation for your pain and suffering. The medical
company should be held liable if their product caused you any physical or
financial suffering. Do not hesitate to take action and justice into your own
hands by filing a dialysis lawsuit.
