The Bay Area personal injury attorneys at The Mitchell Law Firm believe in pedestrian and bicyclist safety. As reported by the Mercury News, A 62-year-old Redwood City man was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross El Camino Real on his bicycle in Atherton on Thursday morning, police said.
The crash happened around 10:35 a.m. at the intersection of Isabella Avenue and El Camino Real. According to a preliminary investigation, the bicyclist was trying to either cross El Camino Real or make a U-turn when he was struck by a Toyota Camry traveling in the inner-most southbound lane, said Lt. Joe Wade of the Atherton Police Department.
"It looks like the bicyclist was — by all indications we can tell — in or near the crosswalk," Wade said.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified him Thursday evening as Christopher Chandler.
The crash is the first fatal traffic accident in Atherton this year.
The driver of the Camry, a 69-year-old Stanford man, stopped after the crash and was interviewed by police Thursday afternoon. The driver cooperated with investigators and voluntarily took to an alcohol and drug test, Wade said.
There was no indication speed was a factor in the crash.
"We’re investigating it just to be sure that there isn’t anything that occurred that needs to be looked at further," Wade said.
The crash and subsequent investigation shut down El Camino Real between Atherton and Watkins avenues for several hours. Chandler’s mangled bicycle lay on the shoulder of El Camino
Real. The force of the crash tore off and dented a wheel, which was thrown into the right southbound lane.
The Toyota’s windshield was damaged as a result of the crash.
