Carlisle Personal Injury Lawyers Discuss Reflective Safety Gear for Cyclists

There is serious risk of injury involved in a bicycle accident caused by a car, therefore having the essential safety gear is crucial to help reduce the risk of life-threatening bicycle injuries. According to statistics, over 5,000 pedestrians, cyclists, and joggers fall victim to vehicles each year.  The majority of bicycle accidents occur after nightfall when it is more difficult to see cyclists.

There are many products on the market that are advertised to keep bicyclists safe while riding in the dark; yet, some products are better than others.   Consumer Reports tested reflective clothing that is expected to help cyclists be more visible to vehicles.  In their investigation, various clothing items were analyzed including jackets, vests, and bike shirts made of reflective thread. The investigation revealed that some items were able to be seen clearly at night while others appear to blend in with the darkness.

Effective Reflective Clothing can Reduce Bicycle Injuries

Betabrand shirts are made with a reflective thread and although it appears the thread would be easily noticed, when Consumer Reports tested the item they discovered it was not visible from 300 feet away. This is the distance a driver needs to start breaking in order to stop a car traveling 60 miles per hour. The Gore Phantom Windstopper Jacket was a good choice of clothing because of the visibility from the front and back; however, Consumer Reports found the Uline safety vest better because of the big bright strips, which helped increased the brightness and intensity allowing a bicyclist to be easily seen by drivers. In addition, the Uline vest was a good economic choice.

Consumer Reports recommends bicyclists increase the amount of reflective pieces on their clothing and ensure the garment can be seen from front and back. Adding accessories such as battery-operated wristbands or reflective ankle bands will help drivers to see bicycle riders at night.  These items can be seen from 300 feet away.  Another inexpensive effective safety item is iron-on reflective tape that can be placed on jackets, backpacks, or other items.

In order for bicyclist’s to reduce their chance of becoming a victim of a serious bicycle accident, they need to wear the appropriate reflective safety gear to remain visible and avoid a collision with a car.
