What is Dialysis
Dialysis is a treatment given to patients who suffer from
kidney failure or other types of kidney-related problems. Patients who have
kidneys that can no longer function at a rate that body requires will usually
receive dialysis treatment. Dialysis treatment is used by 400,000 Americans per
year and is usually prescribed when the kidney has only 15% of function left.
There are several kinds of dialysis treatment. A popular type of dialysis is
hemodialysis where a dialysis machine works as an artificial kidney.
NaturaLyte as Harmful
During hemodialysis, special chemicals called dialysates are
used to help filter the patient’s blood. Two popular dialysates that were given
to 30% of the 400,000 Americans were GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. The drugs were
manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care and were utilized to help regulate acid
levels in the blood.
Unfortunately, the dialysates were extremely harmful as they
contained an increased level of bicarbonate. The medical manufacturer failed to
warn doctors of the extra bicarbonate so patients were experiencing base
poisoning as a result. The base poisoning caused patients to experience:
In addition, Fresenius doctors conducted research
illustrating that patients with higher levels of bicarbonate are six times more
likely to suffer from cardiac arrest compared to those with lower levels.
Lawsuits Filed Over Deaths
It was reported that 947 patients experienced cardiac arrest
while receiving dialysis treatment at a Fresenius Center in 2010. Numerous
people are filing dialysis lawsuits against the manufacturer for patient deaths
linked to the drugs. Lawsuits have been filed for 11 deaths caused by the
dialysis drugs so far. Lawsuits have been filed in George, Kentucky, Ohio,
Texas, Florida, Illinois, and California. You may need GranuFlo Attorneys to help.
The deaths occurred between 2010 and 2012 and the patients
vary as some were as young as 23 and as old as 89. However, their causes of
death are the same as many died of either cardiac arrest or stroke after use of
