How to Handle Your Injuries After an Automobile Accident

Automobile accidents can be scary, and often times can result in physical injuries to the people involved. If you are injured in an automobile accident, it is important to seek medical treatment for your injuries. You should first go to the emergency room of a hospital that is close to the scene of the accident or your home. You want to be examined at the emergency room to be sure that any injuries, even those that you cannot see, are given the proper medical attention. Depending of the severity of your injuries, you may be discharged from the hospital that same day. Typically, the attending physician in the emergency room will tell you to follow-up with your family doctor.

It is important to follow-up with your family doctor. Many times, pain arising from a car accident increases in the days following the accident. Your family doctor can assist you in getting additional treatment, such as physical therapy. Physical therapy is a great method of treating your injuries. It can help you with the pain you are feeling, such as strengthening particular areas of the body that have been injured. Your physical therapy provider may want to send you for diagnostic testing, often referred to as an MRI or EMG. These types of tests determine if you have any serious injuries that cannot be seen upon examination, but that can be the cause of additional pain.

It is important to remember to notify your automobile insurance carrier if you are injured and seeking medical treatment as a result of a car accident. Often times, your auto insurance policy will offer personal injury protection (PIP) benefits. These benefits will pay for your medical treatment related to the automobile accident. It is also beneficial to speak to an experienced attorney about your automobile accident. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
