One of the main goals of San Francisco’s Municipal Railway is to move people about the City in a timely, efficient and safe manner. While this is by and large accomplished, studies have shown that some lines in particular are less efficient and safe than others. Out of the five MUNI Metro lines, one in particular stands out as being particularly unsafe, according to the “San Francisco Examiner:” the N Judah.
The N train, as it is called, traverses from one end of San Francisco, beginning in Ocean Beach, to the other, ending at the Caltrain depot on the eastern side. It goes through several very dense neighborhoods, and as a result, it is not entirely uncommon to see delays due to derailments and other accidents with this particular line. In fact, according to an article published by the “Examiner” it was shown that in a time period between 2008 and 2011 that there were over 80 incidents involving the N train and collisions with pedestrians, automobiles, or other Metro trains. In not all of these cases can fault be attributed to the MUNI employee conducting the train; in some cases the incident is caused by cars running red lights or otherwise acting dangerously, and end with them colliding with the train. Nevertheless, there are many occurrences where a train struck other vehicles or pedestrians. MUNI is endeavoring to make the line safer for everyone, both in and out of the vehicles, and is taking very seriously the implications of this recent report. It is their hope that they can reduce the accidents caused by the line.
