15 Students injured when pickup truck crashed into an Onsted school bus
Expert Michigan bus accident attorney from Goldman & Associates is reporting a crash involving an Onsted school bus, a pickup truck, and another car. The incident occurred on the morning of October 16 as the bus carrying 24 students, ranging in age from kindergarten through 12th grade, was traveling on US-223 near Onsted Highway.
The accident occurred as the pickup truck attempted to exit a gas station along the busy highway. The driver, 21-year-old Tyler Aaron Smith, stated that he never saw the bus traveling west on US-223, as his view was obstructed by two semi trucks parked in the gas station parking lot. When he exited the gas station, Mr. Smith’s pickup was struck by the oncoming bus, causing it to spin and hit another parked vehicle. Authorities do not believe that the bus driver, 45-year-old Jennifer Sawicky-Leon, was at fault in the incident. Officials state that the intersection where the incident occurred is known to be dangerous and prone to accidents.
As a result of the accident, fifteen students were treated at local ProMedica Bixby Hospital. Thirteen of the students were treated for minor injuries and discharged later that day. One student remained at Bixby overnight, though is listed in good condition. Unfortunately, one of the students suffered a serious neck injury and was transferred to the University of Michigan Medical Center to undergo further treatment.
Unfortunately, accidents involving school buses often result in serious injury to students, as students are rarely secured with a safety seat belt. Neck and head injuries are particularly common in these incidents, and a victim may not feel any symptoms from their injury immediately. If your child is involved in a school bus accident, be sure to closely monitor their health in the weeks following the crash. If they complain of a headaches or pains in the neck or back, contact a physician immediately.
