Unique Texas Laws
Aspects of TX Law if You’re in a Car Wreck
If you get into a car accident in Texas, there are certain aspects of state law that may affect the outcome or aftermath of the wreck. For the most part, driving in Texas is just like driving anywhere else—the law expects that you will be a safe, attentive, courteous driver, but there are other unique aspects to the law that may impact how things turn out for you or other involved drivers and passengers.
Driving While Intoxicated
DUI accidents are horrible, simply because they are so avoidable. Texas takes DUI accidents very seriously and levies surcharges on drivers who get behind the wheel when they are intoxicated. After 2003, any driver who is convicted of a DUI pays a yearly surcharge for three years that is dependent on how many DUIs the driver has had before:
- First DUI – $1000 per year
- Second DUI – $1500 per year
- Third DUI – $2000 per year
In Texas, drivers do not have to carry auto registration with them in their cars. This can impact your ability to get all the information you need to make a claim with an insurance company if the other driver has failed to update a drivers’ license address or is trying to be sneaky on other ways.
Texas drivers have to have a front license plate. This is so that cars are easily identified no matter on what side impact occurs. If you are in an accident and do not have a front plate, expect consequences.
Texas laws limit how dark you can make your windows. You will be ticketed for tint that is too dark, too, and it may impact your case really negatively if an attorney can show that your inability to see because of tint caused an accident.
