Research on Standing and Muscle Fatigue
A Swiss research study analyzed the effects of standing work on men and women from different age groups. The participants simulated five hours of standing work interspersed with five-minute rest breaks and a single, 30-minute lunch. Researchers then assessed the effects of sustained low-level exertion on the workers’ legs by asking participants about their comfort level and analyzing their posture stability and electrically-induced muscle twitches.
Participants experienced noticeable muscle fatigue lasting at least 30 minutes past the end of the simulated workday. Over weeks and months of extended standing, the potential for developing disorders of the lower extremities and/or back is more likely to increase. Age and gender did not seem to play a part in the study results.
